It has been a month since the team returned from the cold, stark, breathtaking (especially at altitude!) continent of Antarctica. With each day that passes, it is becoming unequivocally clear that life will never and can never be the same. We have all cleaned up pretty well (a civilian teammate who shall remain nameless did not even recognize me sitting next to him at the opera two weeks ago). No-one would ever know what we have been through to look at us now. But I think I speak for the team when I suggest that our “normal” external aspect belies internal lives that are changed forever. For the better.

Diary of Novice Camper and Climber Anne-Marie Sorrenti

Day 1: Thursday August 13

Well, we all made it to Canmore, Alberta to kickoff our training camp in preparation for Antarctica in January. Full of excitement, we were ready to take on the challenge of the Athabasca Glacier in the Columbia Icefields and to try out some of the brand spanking new equipment received in the knick of time. We also came equipped with the generously donated Canada Goose outerwear and La Sportiva mountaineering boots we had received before departure.

Having signed up for the TPL Antarctica Expedition last April in a moment of what felt a little like divine inspiration (or perhaps sheer insanity), the question “What next?” slowly made its way to the forefront of my mind. It felt like I was about to do something very cool but slightly crazy.
